Bangalore Tigers:
How Indian Tech Upstart Wipro is Rewriting the Rules of Global Competition
Steve Hamm
Website: Bangalore Tigers
I picked up the book by Steve Hamm at the Higgin Bothams counter at Chennai Airport two weeks ago after following the Bangalore Tigers RSS feed for some time now. Apart from the airport book price I am very happy I bought this book. Steve Hamm has written a very brisk and enjoyable read on what has made the Wipro organization tick. His views are filled with a lot of sources from within the organization and in general is a very positive description of the Wipro way.
Until reading this book I have been a skeptic of IT companies like Wipro and Infosys who seemingly have benefited immensely from very supportive government policies. However after reading this book I have gained a tremendous appreciation of all that Wipro has achieved I would say despite all the drawbacks of doing business in India. A lot has to be learned from the way Wipro has handled their opportunities and challenges.
I came away from this book with an appreciation for what the IT companies have accomplished and especially Wipro and Azimji Premji. To change over an old world vegetable oil company to an icon of the Indian IT industry is no ordinary task and I come away with a conviction that Premji is likewise no ordinary man. What Wipro has accomplished is mind boggling and an inspiration.
If there is any one thing I seem to find odd about the book is that Steve Hamm can’t seem to find too much wrong with Wipro. It’s an amazing read and at the end of it all you wonder if truly is what Hamm says it is. For now I am not going down that road.
